Ambil

Ambil (pronounced ahm-BEEL) is a sacred, highly concentrated ceremonial tobacco paste native to the northwest Amazon basin, particularly the Putumayo and Caquetá river regions spanning Colombia, Peru, and Brazil.

Deeply rooted in the ancestral lineages of nations like the Witoto (Murui-Muinane), Bora, Ocaina, and Muinane, Ambil represents the masculine element of ancestral counsel. Within these cultures, it is rarely used alone; it forms a sacred, inseparable partnership with Mambe (fine green powder made from toasted coca leaves and yarumo ash). Together, they are known as the twin pillars of the Maloca (the communal ceremonial longhouse), serving as the medicine of “Right Speech,” focused thinking, and ancestral governance.

Unlike standard hape or mapacho blends that are blown into the nose, Ambil is an oral medicine that is ingested by licking or placing it on the gums.

The Sacred Alchemy & Preparation

The traditional preparation of Ambil is a patient, highly meditative process that requires days of precise concentration and continuous prayer.

The Fusion: The alkaline salt liquid is slowly folded into the thick tobacco reduction over the fire. This crucial chemical step free-bases the nicotine alkaloids, allowing them to pass smoothly and rapidly through the mucous membranes of the mouth. The paste is sometimes lightly flavored with wild fruits, sweet peppers, or vanilla pods to round out its intense bitterness.

The Tobacco Reduction: Large quantities of organic Mapacho (Nicotiana rustica) or native jungle tobacco leaves are boiled down in water over a slow fire for many hours, sometimes days. As the water evaporates, the liquid thickens into a dense, dark, molasses-like syrup.

The Alkaline Catalyst (Sal de Monte): To unlock the medicine’s potency, a specific alkaline mineral catalyst is introduced. Instead of using wood ash directly, elders burn specific wild plants—such as the trunks of native palms, wild cacao species, or mountain salt-plants—and filter water through the ashes to extract a highly alkaline liquid salt known as sal de monte (mountain salt).

How It Is Used

Ambil is completely non-psychoactive, but due to its extreme concentration of Nicotiana rustica, it delivers a powerful, clear-headed, and deeply grounding physical sensation.

1. Oral Application

Ambil is traditionally kept in a small, hollowed-out wooden container, a small gourd, or a modern glass jar. To administer it, a practitioner uses a small wooden stick, a bone spatula, or simply the tip of their index finger to scoop a tiny, pea-sized drop of the dark paste. This drop is wiped directly onto the gums, the inside of the cheeks, or lightly licked off the finger.

2. The Direct Absorption

The paste dissolves slowly in the mouth, mixing with saliva. It is never swallowed directly in large amounts, as raw concentrated nicotine causes immediate, severe stomach cramps and vomiting. Instead, it is kept against the oral mucous membranes, allowing the active compounds to enter the bloodstream gently and steadily.

3. The Ritual of “Word and Focus”

In a traditional circle (mambeadero), the elder passes the Ambil first. Taking a small touch of the paste immediately centers the nervous system, calms physical restlessness, and focuses the mind. Shortly after, a spoonful of green Mambe powder is placed in the cheek. The combination triggers a long-lasting, smooth state of alert mindfulness, allowing elders to sit up all night discussing community laws, resolving conflicts, and recounting ancestral mythologies without fatigue.

4. Clearing Energetic Overload

Spiritually, Ambil acts as a powerful anchor. If a practitioner is experiencing scattered thoughts, emotional overwhelm, or anxiety, a tiny touch of Ambil instantly drops their awareness out of the head and pulls it deep into the physical body. It acts as a shield against external mental noise, filtering out distractions so the user can listen deeply to their inner wisdom.
